Mr. Rodney Christopher Drew

Funeral services for Rodney Christopher Drew, 51, of Kilgore, Texas will be held at noon on Friday, June 4, 2021, with Rev. Ray A. Geter officiating and Bishop Michael McCarty as eulogist at Word of Truth Tabernacle, 2001 Fritz Swanson Road, Kilgore. Burial will follow at Kilgore Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the direction of Victory Funeral Services.

Rodney was born in Kilgore, Texas on Monday, December 29, 1969, the only child to John, Jr. and Bobbie McCarty Drew. He was raised by his dad and mother, Edward “Ebby” and Bobbie Dejohnette. His family discovered that he had departed this life on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at his residence.

As a child he united with Greater New Bethel Baptist Church in Inglewood, California where he served as an usher under the pastorate of Rev. Earl A. Pleasant. Upon his relocation to Kilgore, he united with Word of Truth Tabernacle under the pastorage of his uncle, Bishop Michael McCarty. Periodically he attended Sunday School and Bible Study at Arlem Grove Baptist Church in Henderson, Texas led by his uncle, Rev. Ray A. Geter.

He completed his education in Inglewood, California with graduation from Inglewood High School in 1988. During his school years he was active in Little League Baseball and the Tot and Teens Social Club.

After high school he attended journeyman school to become a butcher. He honed his skills of meat cutting with employment at Vons Market in Inglewood. After making Kilgore his home, he was employed by Lowe’s, Brown and Root, Tip Top Auto Detail, and ultimately at Good Shepherd Medical Center as a floor tech. With a varied skill set he took on many handy man jobs and cut yards when time permitted. In his spare time he enjoyed watching sports.

His grandparents, Zollie, Sr. and Lucille McCarty, Lillie B. Oslin, and John Drew, Sr., aunt, Libby Nealy and uncle, Zollie McCarty, Jr. all preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his memories to his beloved daughter, Brianna Drew of Inglewood, CA; mother and dad, Bobbie and Ebby Dejohnette of Inglewood, CA and his father, John Drew, Jr. of Atlanta, GA.

Other family members and friends mourning his loss are his special uncles and aunts, Herbert and Elizabeth McCarty of Longview, TX, who welcomed him into their home when he came to live in East Texas; Rev. Ray and Brenda Geter, of Kilgore, TX, the ones that took on the role as surrogate parents as he resided in Kilgore; Bishop Michael and Minister Shella McCarty and Taylor and Jackie McCarty all of Kilgore providing additional family support for Rodney; special cousins/friends, Ryan Pierce, Floyd McCarty, Carla and Kerry Washington, Lamont Tatum, Amber Richardson, Cantrell Tatum, Shonna Stallworth, Trina Geter, Kayla Geter and Kianna Geter; faithful friends, Janice Lawler Benson and her husband, John and Eddie Freeman all of Kilgore, TX.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic social distancing and masks are required at the service.

There will be no public viewing.
